New video from ACCC Your Rights Mob on door to door selling, cooling off rights, and hidden charges

The ACCC has created a series of short films to help inform and empower Indigenous people to exercise their consumer rights. Shot on the Tiwi Islands, the ACCC hopes the films will lead to earlier detection of contraventions of consumer laws, bringing about action to stop the conduct.

Door to door sales—cooling off rights and hidden costs encourages Indigenous consumers to know their rights when a door to door salesperson visits their home. Consumers need to understand what goods or services they are actually buying and that they have a ten day cooling off period if they want to change their mind.  Small payment plans may make goods seem affordable but be aware that they often come with hidden costs.

The ACCC’s YouTube channel also has videos on:

  • Mobile phones—telemarketing and mobile phone contracts
  • Six simple rules—consumer rights and guarantees
  • Product safety—choking hazards in children’s toys
